Avoid awkward silences with these all new Conversation Topics!
A HUGE fear stopping people from starting conversations is running out of things to say.
I’ve given suggestions before of how to keep a conversation going, but it feels good to have something to fall back on when your social mojo goes flat.
That’s what these Conversation Topics posts are for! Read on…
In this week’s topics: Wildly Irresponsible Toys | 23 Technologies of 2021 | and New Ice Cream Flavor…”Schweddy Balls”
Avoid awkward silences by having something to talk about!
Crazy concept I know…so here are some recent news (and not-so-news) stories I’ve hand-picked as a resource for you. I’ve picked them because they’re the type of topics most people could either get a laugh from or have an opinion on.
Remember, that’s the point. You want them talking so you can use their responses to move the conversation forward. Good things to say after you tell the story could be, “what do you think about that?,” or “have you ever experienced something like that, before?”
How do you bring these up? Just say something like, “Oh did you hear about…” OR, “Oh, guess what I read the other day?” Your enthusiasm will cause them to be curious and want to hear more.
Below, you’ll find the story headline/link and a brief description of ways you might use it in a conversation.
This Week’s Topics
The 8 Most Wildly Irresponsible Vintage Toys
A topic most people can have fun with is how culture has changed over time. This story, for example, features 8 toys that when you look at them now, make you say “WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING!” Just telling someone about these crazy ideas for kids can have you both laughing. Not only that, you can both recall toys you loved or hated as kids. Childhood memories are a great universal topic!
23 incredible new technologies you’ll see by 2021
You might think this story is a bit on the geek side. You’re kinda right. But most of the technologies listed are improvements on products that touch everyday life. Things like “ultrabooks” which are souped up iPads or the “Sunscreen Pill” that protects you from UV light. Bringing some of these up and how you feel excited or scared reveals something about you to the person you’re talking with. Then, it’s their turn to do the same… Not only that, you can both discuss how this new tech could change things.
Some stores freezing out Ben & Jerry’s new flavor
This is just a fun little story I thought I’d include. It’s good for a quick laugh. The new flavor is inspired by a famous Saturday Night Live skit. It’s called “Schweddy Balls” ice cream. Like I said, good for a quick laugh. You could potentially continue the conversation from there by talking further about Saturday Night Live, ice cream flavors, favorite desserts. Really, sky’s the limit in conversation! The point is to have fun.

So remember to keep these in mind this weekend or all next week to use in any conversational lulls you get into. After all, one of the secret conversation skills of “naturals” is to have “stock” material to fall back on.
